Hairstylist Specific Skills
- Suggest hair style compatible with client's physical features or determine style from client's instructions and preferences.
- Cut, trim, taper, perm and style hair
- Analyze hair and scalp condition and provide basic treatment or advice on beauty care treatments for scalp and hair
- Apply bleach, tints, dyes or rinses to colour, frost or streak hair.
- Take payments and perform other reception duties if required.
- Be able to perform duties such as Iron waving/curling, Roller setting and Blow drying.
Barber Specific Skills
- Shave and trim beards and mustaches
- Provide other hair treatment, such as waving, straightening and tinting and also provide scalp conditioning massages.
- Cut and trim hair according to client's instructions or preferences
- Train new employees
- Order supplies according to need
- Ensuring that combs, scissors, razors and other instruments are cleaned and sanitized after each use.
Credentials and Experience
- Some secondary school education is required.
- Two-three years of experience working in a professional hair salon setting.
- Might be asked to provide a hairstyling/haircut demonstration before being hired to assess skills
- Completion of a two-year apprenticeship or Completion of a college or other program in hairstyling combined with on-the-job training is required; OR
- Completion of a two-year apprenticeship or other barber program is required (On-the-job training may be substituted for formal education)
