Valet Restorations (Kootenays) Ltd. is an established restoration and construction company operating in the Kootenay region of British Columbia since October 2011. The company delivers high-quality interior and exterior renovation, restoration, and construction services to residential and commercial clients across the region. With a team-oriented culture and commitment to safe work practices, Valet Restorations is a trusted employer in the Castlegar and greater West Kootenay community.
The Labourer – Material Handler supports active renovation and restoration project sites and the company warehouse under the direct supervision of a Site Supervisor, Trades Lead, or Project Manager. This is a physically demanding, hands-on role that forms the operational backbone of Valet Restorations' project delivery. The successful candidate will work across multiple worksites in the West Kootenay area, assisting skilled tradespersons, managing materials logistics, and ensuring worksites are safe, organized, and well-supplied at all times.
This position works under direct supervision at all times. The Labourer - Material Handler does not work independently or make autonomous decisions regarding project scope, safety protocols, or material specifications. All work is assigned, directed, and reviewed by a Site Supervisor, Trades Lead, or Project Manager. The employee is expected to follow verbal and written instructions accurately and to seek clarification when needed.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Trades Support and Site Assistance
- Assist carpenters, drywall installers, painters, flooring installers, and other construction tradespersons during interior and exterior renovation and restoration projects by supplying tools, materials, and equipment as directed.
- Perform general demolition work — including removal of drywall, flooring, cabinetry, doors, windows, and fixtures — under supervision of a trades lead or site supervisor, with proper waste segregation.
- Mix, prepare, and transport construction materials including mortar, concrete, plaster, and adhesives to designated work areas as required by tradespersons.
- Erect, adjust, and dismantle scaffolding, shoring, and other temporary structures under supervisory direction to support safe site access.
Materials Handling and Site Logistics
- Load, unload, move, and transport construction materials — including lumber, drywall, insulation, roofing materials, and hardware — by hand or using hand trucks, dollies, and basic material-handling equipment at worksites and the company warehouse.
- Move, stage, load, and unload renovation materials, household appliances, and furniture onto and off company trucks and vans during client property pack-out, pack-in, and site setup operations.
- Receive, verify, and inspect incoming material deliveries against purchase orders; report damages or discrepancies to the site supervisor or project manager; store materials in designated areas.
- Unpack, count, sort, label, and organize crates and containers of renovation supplies, fasteners, and building materials in accordance with company inventory procedures.
Inventory and Material Management
- Participate in scheduled cycle counts and full inventory counts of tools, equipment, and construction materials at the warehouse and project sites; document findings and report variances.
- Fulfil internal warehouse material requests for active project sites by picking, packing, organizing, staging, and preparing required items for loading and dispatch.
Site Protection and Finishing Support
- Protect existing structures, surfaces, and client property from damage during renovation activities by applying protective sheeting, poly barriers, floor protection, masking, and other protective materials as directed.
- Assist with interior finishing preparation tasks — including caulking, patching, sanding, and paint preparation — under the direction of a journeyperson, trades lead, or site supervisor.
Housekeeping, Health and Safety
- Maintain clean, organized, and hazard-free worksite conditions throughout and at the end of each shift by sweeping, removing construction debris, and disposing of waste materials per company and municipal requirements.
- Perform all duties in compliance with applicable Occupational Health and Safety legislation, WHMIS 2015 requirements, company safety policies, and site-specific safe work procedures; wear required PPE at all times.
- Identify and promptly report unsafe conditions, near-misses, injuries, hazards, or defective equipment to the site supervisor; participate in toolbox talks, safety orientations, and employer-required training.
A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred but not required. No post-secondary degree, diploma, or trade certification is required for this position.
EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIREMENTS
No prior formal work experience is required. The employer will train. The following attributes are considered assets:
- Prior experience in a construction, renovation, warehousing, or general labour environment is an asset.
- Familiarity with basic hand tools and material-handling equipment (hand trucks, dollies, pallet jacks) is preferred.
- Physical fitness and ability to perform repetitive manual lifting, carrying, and standing throughout a full shift.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions accurately and work cooperatively within a team.
- Basic knowledge of workplace health and safety practices; WHMIS 2015 awareness training required upon hire (provided by employer).
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work across multiple active worksites in the Castlegar area.
- Work is performed at active indoor and outdoor construction and renovation worksites and at the company warehouse in Castlegar, BC.
- The role involves exposure to construction dust, noise, and varying weather conditions at exterior sites.
- Personal protective equipment (PPE) — including steel-toed boots, hard hat, safety vest, gloves, and eye protection — is required and must be worn at all times.
- The position requires regular lifting of up to 50 lbs and prolonged periods of standing, bending, kneeling, and carrying.
