Job Summary

We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Live In Caregiver to provide personalized support to an individual for a primarily non verbal young man with severe autism and learning disabilities in a home setting. This vital role involves offering comprehensive care that promotes independence, safety, and well-being. As a Live In Caregiver, you will be a trusted companion and caregiver, ensuring the individual’s daily needs are met with kindness, professionalism, and enthusiasm. Your presence will make a meaningful difference in enhancing quality of life and fostering a comfortable, safe environment.

Applicants must have references and experience in developing a relationship and working 1:1 with someone with significant support needs. This position requires someone willing to commit to a long term relationship with the client as it takes time for him to develop sufficient trust to cooperate willingly, and he is severely impacted when he loses a relationship with a primary caregiver. This position requires a specific set of personal characteristics and work ethic as well as compassion and patience for a long term position living as a member of the family in the employer's home.

LANGUAGES: Successful applicant must be fluent in understanding/reading/writing English, and their spoken English must be easily understood; the client cannot understand complex sentences or strong foreign accents.

EDUCATION REQUIRED:

1. College, CEGEP or other non-university certificate or diploma from a program of 3 months to less than 1 year *OR* equivalent caregiving experience of minimum 1 year

2. First Aid certificate

3. Valid Driver's license and driver's abstract

BONUS TRAINING:

a) Graduation from recognized programs specific to working with those with Autism Spectrum Disorder

b) Nonviolent crisis intervention

c) Food Safe certificate

JOBSITE:

Work must be completed at the physical location. There is no option to work remotely. The worksite is a family home on acreage in a rural location with indoor and outdoor pets. SMOKING AND DRUGS ARE NOT PERMITTED.

WORK CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL CAPABILITIES:

Bending, crouching, kneeling, sitting, standing, walking, lifting/carrying, repetitive tasks, work under pressure.

TASKS FOR THIS POSITION:

Administer personal care

Assist client in community/safety

Assist client with bathing and other aspects of personal hygiene

Assist in regular exercise, (e.g., walks)

Provide First Aid if needed

Feed or assist in feeding

Launder clothing and household linens

Perform light housekeeping and cleaning duties

Provide companionship

Provide personal care

Shop for food and household supplies

Plan menu and prepare and serve nutritious meals

Resolve conflict situations

Maintain a safe and healthy environment in the home

Develop risk management plans

Communicate with family members to co-ordinate the preparation and completion of task assignments

Housekeeping activities

Plan for and accompany client on outdoor recreational activities and appointments

Proven ability to deal with difficult or aggressive clients and resolve conflicts while maintaining professionalism and calm demeanor

Pet care (cats/dog/chickens, etc) as required

SECURITY AND SAFETY: Applicant must provide criminal record check for vulnerable sectors issued within 6 months prior to starting date and references from former employers/clients.

COMPENSATION:

Position pays $27 to $36/hour depending on skills and experience.

Minimum 44 hours per week.

Bonuses and overtime available.

Accommodation in the home is available to successful candidate

Gasoline/mileage paid when driving client or running errands for household at employer’s request.

Experience required: 1:1 in home caregiving: 1 year (preferred).

 

Work Location: In person in private family home Spruce Grove, Alberta

 

 

 

INFORMATION FOR APPLICANTS:

This position does not require medical training, but does require experience in being a caregiving companion. Those with experience working 1:1 at length with people with severe autism/learning disabilities will be given preference. Also:

  • Applicants must be minimum 2 years drug-free and non-smokers for this position in a family home.

  • Applicants must have a recent (less than 6months) clear Criminal Record Check for Vulnerable Sectors from the police.

  • Applicants MUST be residents of Canada or living in and legally allowed to work in Canada. We are not sponsoring out of country applicants.
