Job Description
Acme Transport is a provider of multiple truckload transportation services. Established in 2011, we are now one of North America’s largest carriers with operating terminals extending across Western Canada & the Continental US. We need one full- time, permanent Assistant transportation manager to join their team as soon as possible.
Job Duties
- In close contact with general manager effectively plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate the operations of ACME Transport Ltd
- Plan and manage the allocation and utilization of trucks, trailers, drivers, and other transportation resources to maximize fleet productivity and service capacity.
- Oversee the dispatch, maintenance, and service of company trucks and other equipment
- Assign drivers, trucks, and trailers to specific routes and loads based on operational requirements, availability, and driver qualifications.
- Provide leadership, direction, and supervision to drivers, dispatchers, and other transportation personnel, including establishing work expectations and monitoring performance.
- Oversee the recruitment, selection, orientation, training, development, scheduling, and performance management of transportation employees.
- Establish performance standards for drivers and transportation staff and conduct regular reviews to identify performance issues, training requirements, and opportunities for improvement.
- Oversee the preparation and execution of long-haul transportation schedules, routes, assignments, and delivery plans while considering customer requirements, vehicle availability, driver qualifications, operating conditions, and regulatory limitations.
- Monitor fleet productivity, utilization, operating capacity, fuel consumption, maintenance costs, delivery performance, and other key transportation indicators.
- Develop and monitor transportation budgets and control operating expenditures, including fuel, maintenance, repairs, insurance, permits, tolls, equipment, and other transportation-related costs.
- Analyze operational and financial reports to identify cost-saving opportunities, inefficiencies, service issues, and areas requiring corrective action.
- Ensure the company’s trucks and trailers are properly maintained and coordinate preventive maintenance, inspections, repairs, and equipment replacement programs to minimize downtime.
- Oversee compliance with applicable federal and provincial transportation legislation, commercial vehicle safety requirements, hours-of-service regulations, vehicle inspection standards, licensing requirements, and company safety policies.
- Establish and enforce comprehensive transportation safety procedures and promote a strong safety culture among drivers and transportation personnel.
- Review accident, incident, cargo damage, roadside inspection, and safety reports; investigate significant issues and implement corrective and preventive measures.
- Maintain oversight of driver qualification records, safety documentation, inspection records, operating permits, vehicle documentation, and other regulatory records.
- Manage relationships with customers, freight brokers, suppliers, maintenance providers, insurance representatives, regulatory authorities, and other transportation stakeholders.
- Resolve significant customer complaints, service disruptions, delivery issues, driver concerns, equipment failures, and other operational matters.
- Develop contingency plans and make timely management decisions in response to weather conditions, mechanical breakdowns, accidents, delays, border issues, or other disruptions affecting long-haul operations.
- Review contracts, transportation service requirements, and customer expectations to ensure the company has appropriate operational resources and capabilities to meet its commitments.
- Coordinate with senior management regarding fleet expansion, equipment acquisition, staffing requirements, transportation capacity, operating budgets, and strategic planning.
- Evaluate transportation technology and systems, including GPS tracking, electronic logging, fleet-management, dispatch, and communication systems, and implement improvements where appropriate.
- Establish procedures to improve on-time delivery, reduce empty mileage, optimize fuel consumption, improve equipment utilization, and increase overall fleet profitability.
- Monitor industry developments, transportation regulations, market conditions, and operational risks and recommend appropriate changes to company policies and practices.
- Prepare and present transportation performance reports, budgets, operational analyses, and recommendations to senior management.
- Take overall responsibility for ensuring that transportation operations are conducted safely, efficiently, professionally, and in accordance with company objectives and regulatory requirements.
- Perform other senior-level transportation management duties as required by the company.
Job Requirements
- Completion of a bachelors degree in business administration or related field is required.
- 4-5 years of full-time experience in transportation operations are required, including at least 2 years of supervisory experience.
- Strong leadership and people-management skills, with the ability to supervise drivers, dispatchers, and transportation personnel.
- Excellent transportation and fleet management skills, including planning, resource allocation, fleet utilization, and operational oversight.
- Strong knowledge of long-haul trucking operations, freight transportation, route planning, and delivery coordination.
- Strong understanding of commercial transportation safety requirements, hours-of-service regulations, vehicle inspection standards, and applicable transportation legislation.
- Excellent communication skills in written and oral English
- Proficiency in MS Office, MS Word, MS Excel
