Senior Software Engineer

Hours: 37.5 paid hours per week; 7.5 hours per day, Monday to Friday

Pay: CAD $58.00 per hour; equivalent to $113,100 annually at 52 weeks

About the role

heymate! helps local restaurants and retailers offer digital storefronts, direct online ordering and eligible checkout savings. This senior technical role will design and improve the software systems connecting merchants, customers, orders and payment services, while guiding the development team on architecture, integration and reliability.

Key responsibilities

Analyze merchant, customer and internal business requirements for digital storefronts, ordering and checkout, and translate them into functional specifications and detailed system designs.
Evaluate software technologies and integration approaches for the platform; develop and test designs against business needs, security requirements and expected transaction volumes.
Design data models, transaction flows and service interactions linking merchant catalogues, customer accounts, orders, payments and discount rules; evaluate architectural performance and reliability.
Design and implement backend services and APIs, coordinating integration between customer-facing applications, merchant tools and third-party payment services.
Plan technical implementation, deployment and system upgrades with the development team, including testing, release validation and rollback procedures.
Assess end-to-end ordering and payment workflows through integration, performance and security testing; investigate failures and improve data consistency and service resilience.
Maintain system documentation, monitoring and maintenance procedures; diagnose production issues and implement improvements to application performance, reliability and security.
Provide technical leadership to the software team: break platform projects into development tasks, coordinate assignments and dependencies, and review technical deliverables against agreed designs and quality standards.
Lead architecture and code reviews, resolve complex implementation problems, and guide developers on reliable integration of storefront, ordering and payment functionality.
Plan and deliver technical training, onboarding and knowledge-sharing sessions; coach less experienced developers in system design, secure coding, testing and production troubleshooting.

Qualifications and experience

A bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer systems engineering, software engineering, mathematics or a closely related discipline, or completion of a college program in computer science.
At least five years of relevant professional experience in software programming, development and system design, including responsibility for complex backend systems or software architecture.
Experience designing APIs, data models, distributed services and reliable production applications.
Strong skills in backend programming, databases, automated testing, debugging and performance optimization.
Demonstrated experience leading or coordinating technical work, reviewing designs and code, and providing technical training or mentoring to less experienced developers.
Ability to explain technical decisions clearly and collaborate effectively in English with business and technical colleagues.
