Role Description

This is a full-time, on-site role with Roni Excavating, part of the Roni Group of companies, based in Concord, ON. The Junior Estimator will assist in preparing accurate cost estimates and supporting the bidding process for a variety of excavation and construction projects. Key responsibilities include reviewing project plans and specifications, performing quantity take-offs, gathering and analyzing pricing information, and assisting in the preparation of proposals. The role also involves coordinating with project managers, site supervisors, and subcontractors to ensure estimates are aligned with project requirements and organizational goals. As a Junior Estimator with Roni Excavating, you will play an important role in maintaining cost accuracy, supporting project budgets, and contributing to the successful delivery of projects across Ontario.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in preparing accurate cost estimates for excavation and construction projects, ensuring alignment with drawings, specifications, and contract requirements.
  • Review project plans and specifications to understand scope and identify potential cost factors.
  • Perform detailed quantity take-offs for materials, labour, and equipment.
  • Gather, analyze, and evaluate supplier and subcontractor pricing to support competitive bid preparation.
  • Assist in the development of bid proposals and tender submissions.
  • Coordinate with project managers, site supervisors, and subcontractors to ensure estimates reflect project requirements and organizational objectives.
  • Contribute to maintaining cost accuracy and support project budgets throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Prepare cost breakdowns, expenditure forecasts, and reporting at regular intervals.
  • Participate in site visits to collect field data necessary for accurate estimating.
  • Develop and maintain a reliable directory of suppliers, contractors, and subcontractors.
  • Support economic feasibility studies, cost impact assessments, and value engineering reviews.
  • Contribute to the preparation of project schedules and progress tracking to ensure estimates align with deliverables.
  • Provide administrative and technical support to senior estimators and project managers, while learning and applying best practices in estimating.
  • Play an active role in the successful delivery of projects across Ontario by supporting accurate, timely, and cost-effective estimating practices.
  • Undertake additional duties as assigned to support the estimating team and contribute to the overall success of projects.

 

Qualifications

  • Education in Civil or Construction Engineering Technology, or 2–3 years of experience in a skilled construction trade.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, contracts, and technical documents.
  • Solid numerical, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to perform accurate calculations and quantity take-offs.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy when working with cost data, bids, and proposals.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook); familiarity with estimating or project management software is an asset.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with engineers, contractors, suppliers, and project staff.
  • Knowledge of construction methods, materials, equipment, and industry practices.
  • Understanding of tendering procedures, bid processes, and cost-control principles.
  • Willingness to learn, adapt, and grow under the mentorship of senior estimators and project managers.
  • Commitment to safety, teamwork, and supporting the overall success of projects.
