Role and Responsibilities
- Read and interpret blueprints, marine drawings, and welding specifications to ensure accurate fabrication of aluminum boat components.
- Perform high-precision welding on aluminum structures using processes such as GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG), FCAW, PAW, SMAW, OAW, resistance welding, and SAW, ensuring all welds meet marine-grade strength and quality standards.
- Operate manual and semi-automatic welding and cutting equipment, including plasma cutters, flame-cutting tools, and other specialized machinery used in aluminum fabrication.
- Carry out brazing and soldering tasks to join or repair components as required in the boat manufacturing process.
- Use metal-shaping equipment such as brakes, shears, rollers, and bending machines to form, straighten, and prepare aluminum parts with accuracy.
- Fit, align, and position parts and sub-assemblies prior to welding, ensuring proper measurements, angles, and structural alignment.
- Inspect completed welds and fabricated components to verify structural integrity, appearance, and compliance with company and industry standards.
- Repair and rebuild worn or damaged aluminum components by welding additional layers, replacing sections, or reinforcing structures as required.
- Collaborate with builders, fabricators, and other production team members to ensure smooth workflow, timely completion of vessel components, and consistency across projects.
- Maintain welding equipment and tools, ensuring they are cleaned, serviced, and safely stored after each shift.
- Follow all workplace safety procedures, including PPE requirements and marine manufacturing safety protocols, contributing to a safe and professional work environment.
- Assist in lifting, moving, and securing large aluminum components using hoists, jigs, and rigging equipment as needed.
- Participate in production meetings to discuss progress, review specifications, and plan upcoming tasks.
- Perform other related duties as required to support project needs and ensure the successful completion of each vessel.
Job requirements
- Completion of high school.
- Completion of a welding apprenticeship or 2–3 years of hands-on welding/fabrication experience.
- Strong understanding of modern welding practices, including MIG, TIG, FCAW, and other relevant processes used in high-precision aluminum fabrication.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and digital fabrication specifications, including familiarity with metric and imperial measurements.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, enabling clear coordination with production teams and supervisors.
- High attention to detail and commitment to producing clean, structurally sound welds, with a focus on quality and safety.
- Comfort using modern fabrication tools and technologies, such as CNC cutters, digital measuring tools, and calibrated weld equipment (asset).
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, collaborative environment, demonstrating professionalism, reliability, and a positive attitude.
- Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify fit-up issues, material inconsistencies, or technical challenges early in the process.
- Physically capable of performing welding tasks, including standing for extended periods, lifting materials, and working in varied positions.
